Aroshi Yamabiko (Derelict Heaven)
The Source
Aroshi uses “red” (sound) magic, hence the drumsticks and clickity-clackity-gear on the shoes. Overall he has a bit of a “taiko drumming in fall” aesthetic. There is a “long hair” and a “short hair” version, so I did both.
The Costume (2010-2011)
The first edition of the Maji jacket used “biking red” wrinkle-ease twill from Jo-ann. It was wrinkle-ease presumably due to its propensity for doing so. I believe I interfaced it out of sheer desperation. I used some nightmare grey twill from some internet hellhole (fashionfabricsclubdirect, maybe?) for the details. I began prospecting online sources of twill and found the lovely poly-cotton twill from sellfabrics.com which was a dream to work with. I used that fabric in teal and handmade a bunch of grey bias tape for my friend’s green maji jacket that I made for AnimeDetour 2010.
All in all the insets were a bit of a patterning challenge but not too bad, just tedious. I did struggle with getting the amount of shaping I needed in the back curve from a single center seam; if I had to do things all over (yet) again, I think I’d have added more seams on the back so I could make it more fitted.
